Why do some employees hold large amounts of shares in their employer?

Employee share ownership is widely viewed as a good HR practice because it enables employees to share in their company's success and to accumulate wealth. There is also widespread evidence that it is good for companies because it aligns employee interests with those of the company and its shareholders. Research evidence shows that broad-based employee share ownership is associated with enhanced company productivity.
